Privacy Policy

Effective date: August 18, 2026

The short version. Chapter Owl exists to help parents choose books — not to collect data. We ask for the minimum we need, we don’t sell or share your information for advertising, child profiles contain no identifying details by design, and you can delete your account and data at any time.

Who we are

Chapter Owl (“we,” “us”) provides a mobile application and related services that help parents understand the content of books. This policy describes what information we collect when you use the Chapter Owl app and website, how we use it, and the choices you have. Questions or requests: support@chaptersense.app.

Information we collect

Account information. When you create an account: your email address and a password. Passwords are stored only in securely hashed form by our authentication provider — we never see them.

Child profiles — minimal by design. To personalize book-fit guidance, a parent may create child profiles containing only: a nickname you choose, an age, and your content preferences. We deliberately do not ask for a child’s full name, birthdate, photo, school, or any other identifying information. Child profiles are created and controlled entirely by the parent.

Your activity in the app. Books you save to lists, ratings you request, and content reports you choose to submit (which may include a comment you write).

Automatically collected information. Basic technical information necessary to operate the service, such as device type and app version for troubleshooting. We currently use no third-party advertising or marketing analytics trackers.

What we do NOT collect

How we use information

Artificial intelligence

We use AI to help our editorial process analyze book information — publisher descriptions and catalog metadata from permitted sources. Book metadata is the only thing sent to our AI provider (Anthropic). Your personal information, your account details, and your child profiles are never sent to AI systems. Final content ratings are computed by deterministic, published rules and reviewed by people — not decided by AI.

Where your data lives

Your data is stored with Supabase, our database and authentication provider, on infrastructure hosted in the United States, and is encrypted in transit. Access to production data is restricted to authorized administrators. Book metadata is retrieved from public catalog services (Google Books, Open Library) — these lookups involve the book, never your identity.

Children’s privacy

Chapter Owl is designed for parents and guardians, not children, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13. Child profiles are limited, parent-authored records (nickname, age, preferences) that a parent may edit or delete at any time. If you believe a child has provided us personal information directly, contact us and we will delete it.

Your rights and choices

Data retention

We keep your information while your account is active. When you delete your account, we delete your personal information, except where a short retention period is required for security, fraud prevention, or legal compliance. Anonymous, non-personal information (such as which books have been rated) may be retained.

Changes to this policy

If we make material changes, we will notify you in the app or by email before they take effect, and update the effective date above.
